Building up new leaders in the impact investing ecosystem

Sandpiper Ventures

Sandpiper Ventures is an emerging fund manager based in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a mission to invest in women and non-binary founders of early-stage tech companies. Led by women with operational expertise in successfully building, managing and selling companies, Sandpiper Ventures empowers companies not only through investments, but also through sharing firsthand knowledge and learnings to guide portfolio companies to growth. Sandpiper also empowers women as investors by lowering the minimum investment threshold to be accessible to individual accredited investors and provides learning opportunities through active participation as LPs.

For Boann, investing in Sandpiper Ventures Fund II is an opportunity to support emerging fund managers, underrepresented populations and underserved regions, as well as an Operator VC model with the potential to inspire more experienced Canadian entrepreneurs to be fund managers –– all strong elements of a social finance ecosystem that thrives on diversity.

Boann is one of three wholesalers appointed through a competitive, merit-based process by the Government of Canada to invest a portion of the $755M Social Finance Fund (SFF), an initiative that seeks to accelerate the growth of Canada’s social finance market. The SFF supports charities, non-profits, social enterprises, co-operatives and other social purpose organizations (SPOs) in accessing flexible financing opportunities. Greater access to social finance through the SFF will help them grow, innovate, and enhance their social and environmental impacts.
